Prepare a Contract for E-Sign — Step-by-Step Workflow
5–10 minutes · For businesss
A signature-ready contract usually starts as a stack of separate PDFs: a redlined draft, an exhibit, a NDA addendum, a scanned ID. Before you send it to DocuSign or HelloSign you need a single, cleanly-paginated, watermarked, lightweight file — and you want it done without uploading a confidential document to a random web converter.
This workflow walks the file through five free, browser-only tools on iwanttools. Nothing is uploaded at any step. The contract stays on your device through merging, page reordering, redaction of sensitive fields, watermarking ('DRAFT' or 'CONFIDENTIAL') and final compression to fit under e-sign attachment limits.
The 4-step workflow
PDF Merger
Merge the draft, exhibits and signature pages into one PDF.
Why: E-sign platforms charge per envelope and prefer a single document.
PDF Page Reorder
Drag pages into the final reading order.
Why: Signature blocks must come last; exhibits typically follow the main agreement.
Add Watermark to PDF
Stamp "DRAFT" or "FOR REVIEW" diagonally on every page.
Why: Prevents an unsigned copy from being mistaken for the executed version.
Compress PDF
Compress the final PDF below 5 MB for email and DocuSign upload.
Why: Most e-sign and email providers reject attachments above 10–25 MB.
Every step runs in your browser — no upload, no signup.
When to use this workflow
- Sending a SaaS MSA to a customer for redline and signature
- Sharing an investor term sheet that includes a confidential cap table exhibit
- Preparing an employment offer with personal data that should not appear in the final PDF
- Combining a scanned signed page with a clean digital contract before archiving
Frequently asked questions
Is this safe for confidential contracts?
Yes — every tool in the workflow runs entirely in your browser. The PDF is never uploaded to a server, never stored, and never passed to a third party. Open DevTools → Network and watch: no request fires when you process the file.
Why redact before watermarking?
Redaction permanently removes the underlying text from the PDF. If you watermark first and redact second, the redaction still works — but ordering it this way avoids a second pass through the file when you spot a missed field.
What size should I target for e-signature platforms?
DocuSign accepts up to 25 MB per envelope, HelloSign up to 40 MB, Adobe Sign up to 10 MB. Compressing to under 5 MB is a safe default that also works as an email attachment.
