YouTube Thumbnail Size Guide 2026 — Exact Pixels, Aspect, and File Cap

The current YouTube thumbnail spec, why 1280×720 is still the sweet spot, and how to stay under the 2 MB upload cap.
YouTube has accepted the same thumbnail dimensions for over a decade — 1280×720 pixels, 16:9 — and that has not changed in 2026. What has changed is the file-size budget: the cap is 2 MB, and Studio rejects anything larger with no specific error. That single limit is the cause of most thumbnail upload failures.
The official spec
- Resolution: 1280 × 720 pixels (HD, 16:9).
- Minimum width: 640 px (anything smaller looks blurry on TV apps).
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 — anything else is letterboxed.
- File formats: JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP.
- Maximum size: 2 MB.
Why 1280×720 still wins
YouTube downscales your thumbnail to dozens of derived sizes — from the tiny 120×68 preview in search results to the 1920×1080 living-room TV view. Uploading 1920×1080 wastes bytes because the system stores its own master copy anyway, and uploading below 1280×720 means TV-app viewers see a soft image.
Hitting the 2 MB cap
A clean 1280×720 PNG often comes in at 2.5–3.5 MB — just over the limit. Two fixes: export as JPG at quality 85 (drops to ~250 KB instantly), or convert to WebP (some Studio uploaders now accept it, dropping you to ~180 KB). Either way the cap stops being a problem.
Designing for the small preview
Most viewers see your thumbnail at 246×138 in the sidebar — about the size of a postage stamp. Text smaller than ~50 px in the source becomes unreadable at that scale. Use three or four large words maximum, high contrast, and faces close to camera.
