QR Code Best Practices in 2026 — Size, Color, and Error Correction

Design QR codes that actually scan: the right size, contrast, error-correction level, and where to place them.
QR codes finally went mainstream during the pandemic and never left. Restaurant menus, business cards, packaging, event badges, Wi-Fi sharing — they are everywhere. Most failures come from the same handful of mistakes: too small, too low-contrast, or printed on a curved surface without enough error correction.
Minimum scan sizes
- Business cards: 1.2 cm × 1.2 cm minimum.
- Posters viewed from 1–2 metres: 5 cm × 5 cm minimum.
- Billboards viewed from 10+ metres: 30 cm × 30 cm minimum.
- On-screen (slides, ads): at least 200 px on the shorter edge.
Color rules that actually work
Phone cameras read QR codes as luminance, not hue. Dark blocks on a light background works. Light blocks on a dark background works in most modern readers but fails on older Android cameras — avoid it if your audience is broad. Never combine two mid-tone colors (orange on green, purple on red) — there is not enough contrast.
Error correction levels
- L (7% recovery): smooth surfaces, no logo overlay.
- M (15%): default; safe for most prints.
- Q (25%): outdoor signage, light scratches expected.
- H (30%): center-logo overlay or fabric printing.
Static vs dynamic
A static QR code encodes the URL directly — it works forever but cannot be edited. A dynamic QR code encodes a short redirect URL whose destination you can change later. Static is best for personal sharing; dynamic is best for marketing campaigns where the link may change.
